These rhythmic oscillations (clonus) are most easily elicited in the foot (usually with oscillations of 5 to 8 Hz), by briskly dorsiflexing the patient’s ankle. Clonus also may be elicited in the quadriceps, finger flexors, jaw, and other muscles. Spasms & relaxation: Ankle clonus is a series of abnormal reflex movements of the foot, induced by bending the foot upward at the ankle, causing alternate contraction and ankle clonus t.: implies a central nervous system condition of cord or brain; sudden forced dorsiflexion of the ankles results in repeated flexion.
Our findings demonstrate that clonus is largely dependent on reflex and mechanical factors and do not confirm the recent 2011-02-10 Superficial reflexes:Plantar response, abdominal reflex, cremastic reflex, corneal reflex. The ankle clonus test is a diagnostic test wherein doctors induce dorsiflexion (flexing the foot back and forth) to look for abnormal reflex movements of the foot. Deep tendon reflexes are used to understand the response of the muscles. The test is very simple to perform. Clonus at the ankle is tested by rapidly flexing the foot into dorsiflexion (upward), inducing a stretch to the gastrocnemius muscle. Subsequent beating of the foot will result, however only a sustained clonus (5 beats or more) is considered abnormal. Eliciting the clonus reaction can be done in the same manner as eliciting a muscle stretch reflex, which involves tapping the tendon of the joint when it is in a relaxed position often at ninety degrees of flexion 8).

The Ankle Clonus test is used to detect the presence of an upper neutron involvement. standing position, ask them to assume a one-legged stance by standing on the involved side. To check for Ankle Clonus, move the foot up and down a few times and then sharply dorsiflex the ankle and maintain the pressure. Increased intracranial pressure can result in increased muscle tone, spasticity, abnormal reflex movements of the foot (ankle clonus), and seizures. [rarediseases.org] Show info.
